Where your glow begins

The Ultimate Guide to Lash Extension Aftercare (Do’s & Don’ts)

If you want your lash extensions to look full, fluffy, and last as long as possible, proper aftercare is everything. How you care for your lashes at home directly affects retention, lash health, and how your fills look. Here are the best aftercare tips to keep your lashes looking fresh between appointments.

1. Keep Your Lashes Clean

The biggest mistake clients make is not washing their extensions.

Clean lashes = better retention.

Why this matters:

Oil, makeup, natural skin debris, and sweat can break down the adhesive and cause lashes to shed early.

How to clean them:

    •    Use a lash-safe cleanser

    •    Apply gently with a brush

    •    Rinse with water

    •    Pat dry — never rub

    •    Brush your lashes once they’re fully dry

Keeping them clean prevents irritation, buildup, and premature shedding.

2. Avoid Oils Around the Eyes

Oil breaks down lash adhesive — fast.

Be careful with:

    •    Oil-based makeup remover

    •    Heavy eye creams

    •    Sunscreens applied too close to the lash line

    •    Certain mascaras

    •    Facial oils

Choose oil-free products whenever possible.

3. Don’t Touch, Pick, or Pull

It can be tempting, especially when lashes feel fluffy, but touching your extensions causes them to shed faster.

Avoid:

❌ Rubbing your eyes

❌ Sleeping on your face

❌ Playing with your lashes

❌ Pulling at outgrown lashes

These habits can damage not just extensions, but your natural lashes too.

4. Brush Daily — the Right Way

Use a clean spoolie and gently brush your lashes downward, then outward.

This keeps them fluffy and aligned.

Tip: Brush only when your lashes are completely dry.

5. Avoid Steam & Heat for 24–48 Hours

Give the adhesive time to fully cure.

Avoid during the first day:

    •    Hot showers

    •    Saunas

    •    Steam rooms

    •    Hot yoga

    •    Getting your face close to the oven

    •    Intense sweating

After 48 hours, you can return to normal — just keep them clean and avoid oils.

6. Sleep on Your Back if Possible

Side or stomach sleeping can cause friction and fallouts.

For extra retention:

    •    Use a silk pillowcase

    •    Try a lash-protecting sleep mask

These help prevent lashes from getting smashed overnight.

7. Schedule Fills Every 2–3 Weeks

Lashes naturally shed every day as part of your normal hair cycle.

To keep them full:

    •    Book fills in 2 weeks if you want them extra full

    •    Book fills in 3 weeks for regular maintenance

Anything after 4 weeks is usually considered a full set.

8. Avoid Mascara on Extensions

Mascara — even “lash-safe” kinds — can clump the fans together and makes cleaning harder.

If you want extra darkness:

Ask for a slightly fuller set or more textured styling instead.

9. Use a Lash Sealant (Optional but Helpful!)

A sealant can help protect your extensions from oils, humidity, and makeup.

Use 2–3 times a week for best results.

10. Commit to a Lash Bath Routine

Wash your lashes daily if you:

    •    Work out

    •    Wear makeup

    •    Have oily skin

    •    Live in a humid climate (hello, South Florida 🌴)

Clean lashes = long-lasting lashes.

Lash extensions are an investment and with the right aftercare, they can last beautifully between fills. Your routine at home makes all the difference in retention, lash health, and how good your fills will look.
